London NDP MPPs call on school boards to mark Day for the Elimination of Hate

LONDON — MPPs Terence Kernaghan (London North Centre), Peggy Sattler (London West) and Teresa Armstrong (London-Fanshawe) have written a joint letter to the senior administrators, chairs and trustees of the Thames Valley District School board and the London Catholic District School Board to advocate for a proposal to acknowledge June 6 as the official Day for the Elimination of Hate at each school board. This proposal is one of several recommendations made by Hikma Public Affairs Council, in consultation with the London’s Muslim community, in their submission to the National Summit on Islamophobia, which is being held today.

The MPPs will continue to push the provincial government for a comprehensive strategy to address Islamophobia and will be paying close attention to further recommendations from the Summit and Muslim community leadership. As part of this work, they believe that recognizing an official day for the elimination of hate in London’s schools will provide students an opportunity to reflect and learn about Islamophobia and other forms of hate, while keeping the memory of the Salman-Afzaal family alive for years to come.
